Introducing Mbox Viewer: Open Any MBOX or EML File, Instantly
Why we built Mbox Viewer — a native macOS app that opens MBOX and EML files of any size with streaming performance, total privacy, and no Electron or Java in sight.

Today we’re introducing Mbox Viewer, a native macOS app for opening, searching, and exporting MBOX and EML email archives of any size. If you’ve ever exported your Gmail with Google Takeout and then stared at a 12 GB .mbox file wondering how on earth to read it, this app is for you.
The problem we kept running into
MBOX is everywhere. It’s what Google Takeout hands you, what Thunderbird and Apple Mail export, and what shows up during migrations and e-discovery. It’s an open, future-proof format — which is exactly why it’s so valuable as an archive.
The trouble is opening it. On a Mac, your options have always been bad:
- Apple Mail can import MBOX, but it copies every message into your live mailbox. For a large archive that means hours of waiting and a cluttered inbox.
- Thunderbird works, but it’s a heavyweight install just to read one file — and it buckles on multi-gigabyte archives.
- Online converters ask you to upload your private email to someone else’s server. Hard no.
- Text editors show you raw headers and encoded gibberish, and choke on big files.
None of these respect the two things that matter most with email: your time and your privacy.
What makes Mbox Viewer different
We built Mbox Viewer from the ground up to fix this, with four principles.
1. Truly native
Mbox Viewer is a real macOS app — a Universal Binary that runs natively on Apple silicon. There’s no Electron bundling an entire web browser, and no Java runtime to install and babysit. It launches instantly, feels like a Mac app, and sips resources.
2. Streaming, not loading
Instead of pulling a whole file into memory, Mbox Viewer streams it. It indexes the archive and reads only the messages you actually open. The result is that a 20 GB file shows its message list almost immediately and your Mac stays responsive the entire time. There’s no arbitrary size cap.
3. Privacy by default
Your email never leaves your Mac. There’s no account to create, no cloud sync, and no telephone-home. Mbox Viewer opens your archive read-only and works completely offline. What you read stays between you and your computer.
4. Built to do real work
Opening a file is just the start. Mbox Viewer lets you:
- Search across the whole archive with operators like
from:,subject:,date:, andhas:attachment. - Read messages with formatting, inline images, and full headers intact.
- Export to EML, PDF, CSV, or plain text.
- Extract attachments in bulk to a folder.
Free and Pro
Mbox Viewer is free to open and read archives up to 500 MB — plenty to try it on a real file. Pro unlocks unlimited file sizes and the full export toolkit, as a single one-time purchase on the Mac App Store. No subscription, ever.
Where it came from
Mbox Viewer grew out of mboxshell, an open-source command-line tool for parsing MBOX files. The native app brings that same robust parsing engine to a fast, friendly macOS interface.
Try it on your own archive
Export your Gmail with Google Takeout, then open the file and see how fast “instant” really is.
